We are all about freshness. It is what has driven Feedwell ever since we opened our first store in 2017.

Right from the beginning, all of our food has been made by hand, in-store every day, and our customers have come to appreciate that for us, that is what fresh will always mean.

Our produce is locally sourced from Sydney markets each and every morning, with everything we use in our creations coming exclusively from Australian farms.

We bring this same approach to our office catering in Sydney. All of our sandwich platters, salad platters and hot finger food platters are prepared from scratch on the day of your order, individually wrapped in eco-friendly packaging, and delivered to you with care, right on time.

Bespoke Sydney catering for your next event

It can sometimes feel that if you’ve eaten the uninspiring food at one conference, board meeting or corporate bash, you’ve seen and eaten it all. It can sadly be a pretty monotonous stream of the same old stuff.

This is not how we like to do things at Feedwell.

Instead, we take a more bespoke approach, offering a wide variety of food and snacks to ensure that you always have plenty of variety and a wide choice of options to suit all tastes and style of event.

In order to have enough energy to sustain you for the day, it’s essential to live a healthy lifestyle and eat the right foods. Fresh produce like fruit and vegetables are essential, but there are particular foods that can increase your focus, memory and stabilize your mood, more so than others! In fact, the right foods can increase brain power and productivity by up to 20%, according to the World Health Organisation. Find out 5 foods you can incorporate more into your diet to allow you to reach your full potential.

Coffee

There’s a reason so many of us reach for our beloved cup of coffee early in the morning before starting a jam-packed day. Numerous studies have shown that in small doses, caffeine can give you a short boost of energy and alertness, and as a result,  make you more productive in that moment. Medical researcher, Stephen Braun, mentions that caffeine allows us to block the receptors for adenosine, a compound in the brain that causes drowsiness. This is why we feel more awake when we drink coffee, and often why we choose to drink it in the morning.

Salmon

This fatty fish is a great source of fuel to promote productivity, due to its high omega-3 fatty acids content. Omega-3 is known for improving memory, mental performance, and productivity. It is recommended to have at least 226g of salmon a week in order to reap the benefits. Check out our salmon salad here.

Berries

High in antioxidants, berries are known for increasing memory and brain function. Blueberries are high in flavonoids, which can increase oxygen and blood flow to the brain, which helps improve memory and a faster rate of learning. This can last for up to five hours, so it’s great to top blueberries on your oatmeal, or enjoy them in one of our Feedwell seasonal fruit cups in the morning for breakfast, or a snack in the afternoon.

Avocados

They’re filled with fat, but it’s the good fat! Avocados are nice and filling, which means you won’t be so distracted by hunger pains. They also contain tyrosine which is an amino acid that aids blood flow. This is essential to keep the brain alert and engaged, helping to increase focus and productivity. The best part about an avocado is that they are so versatile, as it can be spread on toast, chopped up in a salad, mixed in a guac, or even blended into a smoothie!

Nuts

Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pistachios, cashews or peanuts, are all great options to eat when you need a sustainable boost of energy. Nuts contain monounsaturated fats and amino acids, which both help the neurotransmitter function, allowing you to process information quicker and be more alert. Also filled with Vitamin E, magnesium, and B-vitamins, which help aid in focus and relieve fatigue. Here at Feedwell, we love to get our source of nuts from our crunchy granola made in-house! This is delicious topped on our natural yoghurt. See granola yoghurt pods here, or our healthy peckish pack here.

Now of course each and everyone is different, so you should always consult a professional if you have any concerns or questions about your diet and nutrition and what will work best for you. This article is not meant to be health advice.

We have all been told of ‘Life Changing products to use’, that didn’t really change your life at all. However, drinking the recommended intake of water each day, truly can. For many, drinking 2-3L of water daily seems like mission impossible, but once you read about all the health improvements you will feel once you consume more H20, you may be running to the kitchen sink for a glass more regularly.

Improves energy, and your mood!

Water helps carry nutrients to your body’s cells, fueling your brain, and energising your muscles. When you are dehydrated, it will leave you feeling tired, sluggish, and drained, which can ultimately affect your mood. By keeping hydrated, your brain will function better, helping you understand information, problem solve, and complete your day with energy!

More regular bowel movements

Drinking water helps maintain a smooth, flowing digestive system, as it can help break down food, and flush waste through the intestines, relieving constipation.  Drinking more water also makes you urinate more often, flushing out toxins from your body. When we sweat, urinate, or breathe, we are losing water, so it’s so important to hydrate yourself regularly to keep your body functioning to the best of its ability.

You will feel less bloated

Although you may think filling your stomach up with liquid may make you more bloated, it actually does the complete opposite! When you’re dehydrated, your body holds onto as much fluid as possible, which can cause you to feel bloated. When you’re hydrated, your body will happily let go of fluids it doesn’t need, and can actually help your stomach feel flat and healthy.

You snack less!

When you’re dehydrated, your body can trick you into thinking you are hungry, when really you just need a big glass of water! It’s common for people to reach for a snack when working or wanting to have a break, but if you have a bottle of water in front of you, it can hit the spot, without any of the calories. Of course, drinking water can also boost your metabolism, so you can

Clearer skin

If you struggle with dry, rough skin, drinking water may help you! Staying hydrated can balance the oil and water content on the skin of your face, which means fewer clogged pores and acne. Acne has become increasingly popular in this generation due to all the processed food, fast-paced life, and lack of dehydration.

Eating certain foods can hydrate you too!

Some foods contain more water than others, these include:

  • Watermelon
  • Strawberries
  • Celery
  • Cucumbers
  • Tomatoes

Now of course each and everyone is different, so you should always consult a professional if you have any concerns or questions about your diet and nutrition and what will work best for you. This article is not meant to be health advice.

It’s the secret we are all after. How to stay full for a longer period of time. Thankfully there are foods that can do this. Packed with the right nutrients, you can eat these foods regularly, and prevent those hungry growls and lack of energy that can occur so regularly.

The term that is used to explain a feeling of fullness is called satiety. In 1995, a team of researchers put together a satiety index which measured 38 different foods that contained 240 calories, and tested these foods with patients to determine which foods kept the patients fuller for longer.

Foods that keep us fuller for longer tend to be high in protein, high in fiber, high in volume, and low in energy density.

Here’s a list of foods that you can incorporate into your diet to help you consume less calories, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce snacking!

High fiber foods:

Fiber is essential in our day to day diet, as it helps control blood sugar levels and cholesterol. Fiber is slow to digest, which can make us feel fuller for longer.

High fiber foods include:

  • Barley
  • Oats
  • Rye
  • Whole-wheat bread
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Legumes

Drink water:

It’s very common for us all to think we are hungry,  when in fact we are just dehydrated. Water can take up space in our stomach that can help assist with the feeling of satiety. Try make sure you have consumed 2-3L of water a day before you grab yourself a snack out of hunger!

Eggs:

Eggs are a great ingredient that can be cooked in multiple ways –  poached, scrambled, or boiled. Eggs are high in protein and rank high on the satiety index scale, which means they help you feel fuller for longer. To be healthy, add a boiled egg to a salad for lunch!

Greek yoghurt:

This creamy goodness is full of protein, having more than double the amount of protein than your regular yoghurt. The combination of texture and protein also makes you feel like you are eating more than you think!

Sleep:

The less sleep you get, the more your body craves energy, the hungrier you feel, the more you eat! Feeling sluggish, tired and exhausted can encourage you to reach for a snack. By getting enough sleep each night, your body will feel recharged and energised, which reduces those annoying hunger pains.

Avocado:

Avoid the bad fat, eat more of the good fat, like avocados! The fats found in avocados take longer for your body to digest, which means it takes longer to leave your body and as a result keeps you feeling fuller for longer. Avos are also high in fiber, and are great to have in a salad, smoothie, or spread on a piece of rye toast.

Nuts:

Like avos, nuts also are high in fiber and in fat (the good kind). To keep your hunger pains at bay, it’s important to stick to a ‘handful’ serving size when eating nuts. Almonds have the highes fiber content, making them a great snack if you can stick to maximum 15 per serve.

Spices:

Spicy food such as red chilies or cayenne pepper can add a pack full of flavour to your meal,  but also can help you feel fuller for longer as spices act as an appetite suppressant. If you’re not a spice fanatic, try adding a little spice here and there to your meals to build your tolerance.

Now of course each and everyone is different, so you should always consult a professional if you have any concerns or questions about your diet and nutrition and what will work best for you.

The best way to think of your immune system is to think of the army – there to fight and protect anything that threatens to damage or take over, foreign or domestic! Our immune system protects us against infections, disease, and can also help us recover from injuries. In order for our immune system to protect us, we need to fuel it with the right food to give it the best armour possible. See below the foods you can incorporate into your diet to ensure your immune system is ready for battle. (Last army reference, I promise).

Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C is an important nutrient to consume when you want to fight off sickness and improve the immune system.  This is because Vitamin C helps encourage the production of white blood cells, which are essential to fight off infections. You’ll often find citrus fruits are filled with this vitamin, such as grapefruits, oranges, mandarins, lemons and limes (to name a few). Vitamin C needs to be consumed daily, as our body does not produce or store it. The recommended daily intake for women is 75mg, and for men, 90mg. 1 small orange contains 53.2mg, to give you a rough understanding on how much to consume.

Turmeric

Turmeric is an ingredient that comes with a lot of added benefits, as it helps the body naturally cleanse, and can assist in fighting infections such as colds and flu, due to its anti–inflammatory qualities.

It is the ingredient in Turmeric called cucurmin, which is actually what really assists and improves a healthy immune system. This ingredient can help fight against viral replication, and suppresses various inflammatory molecules which are responsible for the damage by viruses.

Ginger

It’s common for people to order a juice with ginger to help fight off that tickling sensation at the back of their throat when one may feel they’re getting sick. That’s because ginger contains many potent anti-inflammatory compounds such as antioxidants, which help protect your body from damage.

You won’t have a strong immune system by consuming ginger for one day, so try drinking ginger tea regularly, or consuming a ginger concoction regularly.

Broccoli

Vitamin C as mentioned above is one of the essential nutrients to consume in order to have a healthy immune system, and broccoli is loaded with it! In fact, a half cup of broccoli contains 84% of the RDI (recommended daily intake) for vitamin C! Broccoli is also known to strengthen bones, improve skin, and is filled with fiber for a healthy digestive system.

Garlic

Garlic is a popular ingredient when cooking, and can often leave you with an interesting smell of breath. However, garlic is beneficial not only for the strong flavour, but for our gut. When garlic is crushed or chewed, a compound called alliin, turns into allicin, which then converts into sulphur containing compounds. These compounds help assist the disease-fighting white blood cells, and as a result assists our gut fight off viruses, diseases or the common cold or flu. This will also assist with maintaining a healthy lifestyle as well.

Now of course each and everyone is different, so you should always consult a professional if you have any concerns or questions about your diet and nutrition and what will work best for you.

It can be tough to stay disciplined and eat healthily at work, particularly with all the delicious cafes close by, vending machines with chocolate and soft drink, or when you’re just plain bored and you use food as a distraction from your day’s work. To help keep you on track, here are four simple choices you can make every-day to avoid temptations and eat healthily.

Stop skipping breakfast!

You slept in too long, your kid can’t find their favourite toy, or you can’t find your keys. Being late can sometimes feel inevitable, but it can also cause you to rush out the door and skip breakfast.  Come 10am, you’re so hungry you could eat anything, the temptation is too hard to ignore and you scoff down a bacon and egg roll. (Alright, I may be talking from personal experience here… but you get my drift, it happens!).

There are so many proven benefits to eating a wholesome, nutritious breakfast to start your day. These include regulated blood sugar levels, improved productivity, reduced risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes, and most importantly breakfast gives you the fuel to keep you going for the day. By eating a nutritious breakfast, you’ll feel less distracted and tempted to eat something naughty, and you’ll also be far more focused!

Click here to view a list of healthy breakfast ideas.

Stick to structure

By creating a structured meal plan in your day, you can ensure you’re eating nutritious food, whilst remaining satisfied and reducing snacking. This encourages eating 5 meals a day, instead of snacking continuously through-out the day. Each week, set out a weekly planner of what you plan to eat each day.

Stay hydrated

Did you know the human body finds it difficult to distinguish between hunger and thirst? That’s why it’s so important to ensure you’re hydrated through-out the day. To do this, try taking 7 big sips of water before and after every meal you have, and to always keep a full water bottle at your desk. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, men should have at least 3.7 litres of water a day, and women should have at least 2.7 litres a day.

Snack Smart

Stock up on healthy and balanced snacks. If you don’t enjoy packing your bag full of food, keep healthy snacks in your draw that don’t need refrigeration. To view a list of these snacks, click here. If you do have a fridge in your office and can store food, here are some fresh snacks! These snacks are nutritious, delicious, and most importantly – keep you full!

Whether it’s dietary requirements, food allergies, or a moral compass, more and more people are changing their lifestyle by adapting their diets. The standard order for office catering, lunches and meals has been influenced by this change, and businesses are now looking for catering and food delivery companies who provide more options for gluten free, vegetarian, and vegan diets.

So, what does it mean to be vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free?

Vegetarian

A person who is vegetarian means they do not consume any meat or fish in their diet. People may choose a vegetarian diet for religious reasons, for moral reasons, for sustainability, for food intolerances, health reasons or simply a preference. Some vegetarians may include fish in their diet, so it’s important to check with staff members before ordering for them.

Vegan

To be a vegan, means you do not include any animal products, including dairy and eggs as they are derived from animals. Individuals choose a vegan diet usually due to ethical, environmental, or health reasons.

Gluten Free

A gluten free diet involves excluding foods that contain gluten, found in wheat, rye and barley. This diet is usually for people who have a severe allergy to gluten, however many choose this diet for health reasons too.

We provide a variety of food which accommodates all different tastebuds and dietary requirements. Whether you are eating our food in one of our stores, for catering or at home, feel free to reach out if you need any assistance in ordering with us to accommodate your dietary requirements.

Fast food has been around for years and years, heavily marketed to us as this delicious, cheap, convenient meal –  and it’s worked. A study conducted in 2018, found that 83% of Australians admit to enjoying unhealthy fast food. This type of food may be delicious and easy to order, but it’s negative effects from consumption can easily outweigh any positives.

1. You may feel lethargic and tired

With the large serving sizes that come with fast food such as the popular burger, fries and coke combos, it’s easy to overeat, which can leave you feeling full, bloated, and lethargic. Due to the high sugar content, your body sugar levels may spike, then crash, leaving you feeling more tired than before you ate.

2. Your skin may break out

Food high in simple sugars often found in white flour, are the foods that will have a greater negative impact on your skin. These foods increase congestion of oils, block the pores and deteriorate the skin, and can contribute and sometimes be the cause of an acne breakout.

3. Memory and cognitive function

Some fast food can be filled with saturated fats, and research has shown that saturated fats can impact your memory speed.

4. Teeth decay

Soda drinks can increase the amount of acidity in your mouth, which is a huge contributor to decaying teeth. Although your fast food order of chips, fried chicken, chips and a fizzy drink may be cheap, visiting the dentist for tooth decay isn’t.

5. Increased risk of obesity

Fast food is filled with saturated fats, sugars, and carbs, and it’s very easy to overconsume. Due to fast food being filled with empty calories with little to no positive nutrition, your body will process the calories to fat, causing you to gain weight faster.

We’re the first to admin, junk food can be tasty! And everything in proportion. Whilst these meals can be assumed as a treat, they should not form part of an ongoing healthy lifestyle.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt personally victimized by bloating *Raises hand*. Bloating does not discriminate and can happen to the best of us. Bloating can leave us feeling sluggish, tired, irritable, and overall affect our well being.

So what is bloating and how is it caused?

Bloat is a buildup of gas, and can be often caused by digestion, too much swallowed air, or from an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. Another sensation of bloating can be caused from excess water retention. Many people who have experienced bloating describe it feeling as if a balloon has been blown up in their stomach, NOT FUN!

Bloating is unfortunately very common, and millions of people all over the world suffer daily. We have put together a list of foods that can assist or prevent bloating. Please keep in mind that people who suffer from IBS and have been recommended a low FODMAP diet, may not be able to eat all these foods.

Now, let’s step on that gas! (excuse the pun)

Celery and Fennel

Celery and Fennel contain natural diuretics, which assist in flushing out any excess water in your body. Excess water storage is a contributing factor to feeling bloated, so by including fennel and celery into your diet regularly, you can say “adios amigos” to your bloating.

Asparagus

Known for making your urine smell, it also makes you urine often, and assists flushing out the toxins in your body. Asparagus also contains compounds that act as prebiotics which help support the growth of ‘healthy/good’ bacteria, and this can assist in a healthy digestive system and gut.

Ginger

One of the oldest herbal medicines in the world, ginger can aid bloating due to its digestive enzyme called zingibain, which assists the body to break down foods and help process protein. Ginger also contains many potent anti-inflammatory compounds that calm down your intestines and colon, allowing you to pass food more easily, and reduce gas and bloating.

Lemon

The famous supermodel (not me) Miranda Kerr, (close enough), drinks hot water with lemon every morning to help kick start her digestion, and she’s right in doing so – it really does work! Drinking lemon and water regularly before a meal can double your hydration intake, but also boosts the digestive system, as the acidity of the fruit helps the GI tract chug along faster.  Nice work Miranda!

Papaya

Papaya is the digestive rockstar. Papaya contains an enzyme called papain, and this works as a laxative, which helps get the body’s elimination process operating, getting rid of excess waste, and aiding bloating and digestive discomfort. Hot tip – squeeze fresh lime on your papaya and thank me later!

Raspberries & Blueberries

Fruits can often have a high sugar count, and this can leave you feeling gassy and bloated. However, these two berries are lower in sugar and high in fiber and water, so your digestive system can keep going n’ flowing, no gas required.

A cohesive team does not evolve over night. To build a positive sense of culture in the workplace, employees need to build relations with each other through trust, friendship and respect. One easy and affordable way to strengthen and improve the culture of your team is to provide team lunches. Team lunches can bring the team together (because hey, who doesn’t like free food!), encourage socialising and form stronger relationships, and overall improve team culture.

Brings people together

Working in a busy office may look social, but in reality a lot of our time can be spent focusing solely on a screen, and that doesn’t leave a lot of room for social engagement.

A catered lunch for the office is a great way to bring everyone together, and get those who often choose to eat lunch at their desk, keep to themselves and new hires all together. Communication is incredibly important within a workforce, and a bonding team lunch can be such a simple solution to forming stronger relationships in the business, over a not so formal setting.

Staff feel valued

It is commonly conveyed by staff that they feel appreciated and valued when the company provides a catered meal for them. By offering services like this to staff, it can boost morale and an overall sense of happiness within a job, and in return increase productivity. A team lunch can be versatile, and can embed certain cultures and too. This encourages diversity within the workplace, by doing themed lunches such as Mexican, Japanese, Thai, Italian… the list goes on!

A healthier workplace

In a fast paced work environment, many staff may choose fast food, such as burgers and chips. As a result, they may feel a little deflated and unmotivated, resulting in unproductive work. Staff may also feel as though they don’t have time to duck out for lunch, and remain seated at their desk for the duration of the day. This is actually less beneficial, as it is more productive to give yourself at least a 30 minute break each day to help regroup. With a team lunch, you can encourage healthy eating, with nutrient dense food like salads, sandwiches, fruits and more. When staff feel healthy, they feel happy, and that is crucial!

If you want any help in putting together a team lunch, we’d be happy to help! We deliver all across Sydney.

COVID-19 has affected the way we work, socialise, and overall live. Events and group meetings of any sort were put to a complete halt in March, and has since heavily impacted the events and hospitality industry. Fortunately for NSW, the spike of covid cases dropped and has remained at a safe level, allowing regulations to ease and for people to return back to work to restore a sense of normality. With business offices beginning to fill up again, companies are deciding whether it is safe to organise group functions. This is a guide to assure you it is safe to do so, as long as you follow precautionary safety steps prior, during, and after an event, meeting, and staff lunch.

Please keep in mind that the government regulations continuously update and we recommend to visit these websites below before going ahead with any group function.

Below are some tips on organising:

  • An event
  • A meeting with catering
  • A staff lunch

AN EVENT

An event takes more preparation in comparison to your average staff lunch or team meeting, so there are a few more precautionary steps to take in order to be covid safe.

PRIOR:

  • Attendance & Supplies

First and foremost, make sure you are below the legal maximum amount of attendees on your list.

Ensure you pre-order sufficient supplies, and have more than enough for the day. These supplies will include tissues, hand sanitizer, and surgical face masks (if you wish). To be extra cautious, you may want to invest in a forehead temperature thermometer.

We can help you organise these supplies if you need.

Organise a sign in sheet. This sheet will need to obtain all visitors, organisers and caterers details, such as their mobile number and email.

Communicate with your attendees continuously prior to the event to confirm that it is going ahead, and some of the precautions that are being taken to ensure it is COVID safe.

  • Catering

Depending on the numbers, catering can be organised in two different ways; shared platters, or individually packaged items.

Single Serves
Since March, we have seen a spike in the increase of individually packaged items purchased, as this is a safe and efficient way to order catering per person.

Popular items include:

Sandwich, Salad and Sweet Pack
Wrap, Salad and Sweet pack
Salad Bowls

To view our entire individually packed range, click: Here

Single serve items can also have a label with the dietaries and the name

 E.g Adam.F Gluten Free.

Shared platters

If you would like to go ahead with shared platters, we recommend assigning people to serve the food, and have disposable tongs so people are not touching the same tongs.

Alongside catering, we can also provide:

  • Hand sanitiser
  • Individually packaged serviettes and cutlery
  • Face masks
  • Tongs
  • Signs for platters

  • Back up plan

Designate an area where someone can self isolate if they begin to show any flu-like symptoms, and organise a plan to safely transfer this person from the venue to a health facility.

DURING:

  • Highlight where there are supplies, bins and other bathrooms to wash hands.
  • Encourage washing hands and/or hand sanitising.
  • Inform attendees to not stand too close to each other when standing.
  • If seated, try to have the placed a safe distance apart, in accordance with the regulations at the time.

AFTER:

  • Retain all collection personal info from participants for at least one month.
  • If a person was isolated and suspected of Covid-19, all attendees should be notified. You should contact the health authorities immediately if you find out before the health authorities find out.

Organizing an event doesn’t need to be stressful, just well organised. Follow these steps to ensure you are Covid Safe. If you need any assistance, feel free to contact us on (02) 9252 1982 or email us at orders@feedwell.com.au

CATERED  MEETING

If you’d like to host a meeting with catering, it’s important to follow these steps to ensure it is as safe and smooth as possible.

PRIOR

Sanitise the room

It’s essential to sanitise the room in which you are holding the meeting, to get rid of any germs from previous groups. Place a hand sanitiser clearly in the room so it is visible and accessible to attendees. Try and book a room that is big enough so all attendees can be spaced apart.

Sign in sheet

If you have people attending the meeting that do not work in the building, prepare a sign in sheet so you can record their details, or have reception organise it for you.

If anyone is feeling unwell before the meeting, insist they cancel and stay home.

Catering

A simple, hassle free, and safe way to order catering is to order from the single serve menu. These items are individually packaged, and can be labelled with staff names and dietaries if requested. Popular items that are frequently ordered from customers holding meeting are:

The Brownie and Muffin Pack
Tropical Fruit Cup
Grazing for 1

Shared platters are also being ordered. We can provide tongs and gloves, and cutlery,  so a staff member can handle the food safely and disperse between attendees, or each attendee can use their own tongs.

DURING

  • Highlight where the bathrooms, bins, and sanitisers are located.
  • Encourage washing hands and/or hand sanitising.
  • Emphasise no hand shaking when greeting and for the farewell.
  • Ensure all attendees who do not work within the building have documented their full name, email, and mobile number.

AFTER

  • Sanitise the room after everyone has left.
  • If a person was isolated and suspected of Covid-19, all attendees should be notified. You should contact the health authorities immediately if you find out before the health authorities find out.

STAFF LUNCH

If operated safely, staff lunches can still go ahead in the office as they are a great way to maintain staff interaction. To read more about why a staff lunch can bring a team together, click: Here

PRIOR:

Check for attendance

Before covid, the majority of staff would be working from the office, and the attendance for staff lunches was often high. However, if your office has the flexibility of working from home, it would be a good idea to create an invite via email so you know roughly what the attendance will look like, and to ensure you don’t over order resulting in food wastage.

Catering

Health and hygiene has been at the forefront of people’s mind during this time, and many businesses are looking towards more nutritious and healthy meals for their staff.

Popular meals we’ve seen ordered often are:

Sandwich and Salad Packs
Salad Bowls
Fruit and Muesli

With staff lunches, it’s common for it to be held in the main kitchen, or a common area, with an array of shared platters where staff can come and select what they would like and serve themselves. This doesn’t necessarily have to change, however instead, organise 2-3 designated ‘servers’ to wear face masks, gloves, and use tongs to serve the food to the staff. This will prevent the sharing of germs from using the same utensils. Alternatively each staff can have their own pair of disposable tongs so they can grab items from platters.

An alternative to shared platters is the individually packaged items, such as the salad, sandwich and sweet pack. This way each person receives their own lunch without having to choose from a shared platter with others.

Sanitisation

Ensure there are enough hand sanitisers available for staff to use.

DURING

  • If the staff lunch occurs in a common room, encourage staff to sit or stand with distance between others.
  • Encourage all staff to sanitise before and after eating.

AFTER

  • If the office does not have cleaners, clean up the common room with sanitiser to avoid the spread of germs
  • If anyone begins to feel unwell, notify all attendees to monitor their symptoms for 14 days.
  • If a person was isolated and suspected of Covid-19, all attendees should be notified. You should contact the health authorities immediately if you find out before the health authorities find out.

Welcome back – a moment of joy!

The announcement of the JobKeeper Scheme was one of the best feelings we have experienced as a business. Whilst still watching on TV the Prime Minister and Treasurer’s announcement of this scheme, and before it had even ended, our founder, Eric, was on the phone to our accountant to get more information how this works.

Within 1 hour, phone calls were made to the 9 staff members who were eligible for the JobKeeper scheme, and they were informed that their employment was reinstated immediately. The business was given a heartbeat again.

For those that are unaware of this scheme; in short the government will fund $1,500 a fortnight for each employee of organisations who have been hit hard by COVID (like us). The employee however must be an Australian or NZ citizen, or permanent resident.

It was a bittersweet moment, as a large portion of our team are international students, studying and working in Australia to create a better life for themselves. They remain out of work, will receive no government support and unlikely to be able to continue paying their study fees. Also Aussie casual staff with less than 12 months employment with us were also not eligible.

This in itself has given the remaining team extra motivation to ensure we work on ways to re-grow the business and adapt to the new business landscape. We are committed to bringing back each of our staff back– one by one.

For the team that we have been able to bring back, some have now adapted into new roles and learnings to help bring the brand back to life. Some examples:

  • Matt – previously he was our sales rep for corporate catering. He selflessly volunteered to become our delivery driver for home deliveries, and is now learning about Google strategies to drive sales for our e-commerce online business.
  • Hannah – previously handled in-store marketing and is now learning all about e-commerce, working with web developers, creating online blogs, and creating our new and improved training manuals for when our stores re-open.
  • Mary – previously was customer service for our corporate catering clients, and is now managing all our social media content, photography and online promotions.
  • Bonny – previously a barista in store, and has now pivoted to the kitchen to help with our home delivery meals, and being a delivery driver.
  • Anne – previously our regional manager of 4 stores; now doing anything and everything in the 1 remaining store to keep it open.

The toughest thing we’ve had to do – losing our team

Losing revenue was tough, closing our doors was tough, but having to let get go of the staff was truly the hardest and most heart breaking thing this business has ever had to do.

As we started shutting down our stores, the next realisation is that there is very little work for our staff to do. It sounds so obvious, but it’s not a realisation you want to accept. Our head office staff work closely with our in-store staff, and were scrambling to try create work, or create new streams of revenue to keep our store staff in jobs.

We simply did not want to “just let our team go” like every other company was doing. These are the people who have given blood, sweat and tears for our brand. It sounds so cliché, but our staff are truly a big family. Despite not wanting to accept our fate, as a small business with little “spare cash reserves”, and now close to no sales, we did not have a choice but to stand down the large majority of our team. Even if our take-away and home delivery were a success, there would be nowhere near enough sales for the foreseeable future to be able to afford retaining our whole workforce.

For the remaining team members, everyone’s wages were cut, and working days also cut. This was by far the lowest we as a business had ever felt. However instead of playing the “poor me” card, some staff went even further and volunteered taking further pay cuts, unpaid leave and giving their shifts to other staff they knew needed the income more. In a time where some of the public were acting so selfish in fighting over bloody toilet paper, it was truly humbling to see acts of such selflessness from our staff. The business will forever be indebted to our loyal crew.

We employ based on attitude, not skillset; that drives our culture. We would rather brag about how low our staff turnover rate is, compared to breaking a sales record. Our proudest achievement in the business to date is that we have close to zero staff turnover. We have a relatively young team in our stores and in our head-office, and together they have achieved incredible results over the last 2 years.

When a staff member starts their employment with us, we make them a promise that we will provide a place for them to work, learn and flourish. By now letting go of many of our staff, we did not fulfil our end of the bargain; we have let them down. Most will argue “we had no other choice” – that may be the case, but that’s just not the way we see it, and does not make it any easier to accept.

When sh*t hit the fan

Our business is reliant on high foot traffic in the Sydney CBD & North Sydney coming into our retail stores, and our corporate customers ordering catering for their office.

Before the government regulations started being imposed, we started to notice our corporate customers were cancelling their orders as meetings and events were slowly being banned in offices. Within 1 week, our revenue from corporate catering dropped 95%. The tens of thousands of dollars and years of time spent on developing online software, staff training, systems, marketing etc etc seemed to be wiped pretty much overnight.

We anticipated our stores would be hit next, and a crisis meeting was quickly called with our key staff. We mapped out worst case scenarios and decisions that would need to be made if different events transpired. Mindful that our cash reserves would zap quickly if revenue dried up, we braced ourselves to make ugly decisions quickly if the brand was any chance to survive and bounce back in the long term.

In this meeting, whilst we jotted down our worst case scenarios, we all remained optimistic, and probably more hopeful than anything, that none of these scenarios would transpire. The message was clear to the leaders in our business – remain calm, protect our staff, protect our customers – and brace yourself for an absolute sh*t fight.

As the week progressed, and the importance for everyone to work from home escalated, we saw rapid decreases in people commuting to the Sydney CBD and North Sydney. Our worst case scenarios became reality within days. Most companies decided to shut down their offices before government lock downs and we saw our in-store revenue drop about 90% within days. Like many other companies, we did not anticipate our business would be hit so rapidly. It seems so obvious in hindsight!

Whilst initially defiant to keep our stores open, it was clear quickly this was a battle we could not win. With revenue so low, expenses so high, and more government restrictions being announced by the day, we had little choice but to shut down 3 out of 4 stores. As a small business, we do not have a tonne of cash reserves, and rely heavily on our cash flow each week. If we kept our stores open, the little cash reserves we have would be wiped, and we would have zero chance of re-opening in the future.

With cash flow now gone, our goal was no longer growth, but focus quickly shifted to survival.

It’s without a doubt, that COVID-19 has shaken businesses around the world to their core, causing many doors to shut, millions of staff without a job, and millions of business owners on the brink of despair.

We won’t sugar coat it, Real Peas was hit…hard, and it has absolutely sucked. However these blogs will not be about dwelling on the unfortunate situations we and the rest of the world have been placed in. Instead we will share the raw lessons we have learnt, the tough decisions we have had to make, how we are adapting the business and how we plan to ensure the business comes out the other side stronger.

We will give you an inside view on the ups, downs and everything in between in this blog series. There is no script, and we are not sure what each blog will bring – but we will improvise on the go – we’d love your thoughts along the way!

Who are we?

Before diving into our blogs, for those of you that are getting to know us for the first time, here’s a quick rundown.

We are a fresh food and coffee business with 4 retail stores in the Sydney CBD and North Sydney. The idea for the business was formed by our Founder, Eric, who came across “grab and go” food concepts whilst working as a lawyer in London. However these were not like the “grab and go” rubbish we are used to in Australia from servos and supermarkets. It was fresh, healthy, tasty and affordable!

Upon moving back to Sydney, Eric, being sick of the corporate world, and adamant this type of business would work in Australia, launched the business in October 2017 opening our first store on Pitt St, in the Sydney CBD.

The launch of the first store was….a complete disaster! We found Aussie consumers questioning the freshness of our product because it was packaged (we’ve all had a horrible servo sandwich before!), but not knowing we made our products fresh everyday, by hand, in store, using the best ingredients, with love (ok enough of the sales pitch sorry).

It took time, however with a relentless commitment to freshness and quality, and thousands of hours speaking to customers (and even showing them inside our kitchen to prove we made our products fresh!), we gained the trust from our customers. Customers told their friends, who then told their friends and suddenly, we actually had a business on our hands!

We saw quick growth, saw the team growing rapidly, managed to raise some investment, 3 more stores launched, created a new business for corporate catering, and even moved into our first tiny head office just a few months ago! There were a crap load of mistakes in between, but overall the business was tracking in the right direction. Then COVID hit….

Did you notice something wooly in your delivery box?

Real Peas is proud to join forces as a planet protector in packaging!

You may have noticed some wool in your delivery packs when you opened them up.  This wool is made from 100% sheep’s wool, perfect for protecting and insulating the the packaging to keep your food as fresh as can be.

Why did we choose sheep wool for insulation?

Sheep wool is the first practical alternative to polystyrene and other unsustainable insulated packaging. It is also recyclable and compostable making it the most environmentally responsible!

Woolpack is made from 100% biodegradable and compostable felted sheep’s wool, sealed within a recyclable food grade wrap. The wool that is used is considered “waste” or “leftover” from wool mills so it has an added benefit of use and also reduces landfill.

The Woolpack is made of a complex blend of different wool fibers to give the wool optimum insulation properties. After the wool is sourced, it is scoured, naturally washed in hot water and soap, and felted to make the insulation material to the required specs.

The Woolpack is incredibly hygienic as it is sterilised resulting in it smelling like a freshly made, new pure wool jumper. The wool is wrapped and sealed inside a recyclable, food grade polyethylene wrap prevents the fibers coming into direct contact with your food and any other products.

CONTACT US WITH ANY QUESTIONS:

As the threat of Coronavirus continues to increase, it’s important for us to provide assurance about the measures we are taking to protect our team, our customers, our suppliers and the community.

Health, safety and hygiene has always been at the forefront of what we do. During these times, we are doing even more to up these standards. These measures include:

  • More frequent sanitisation (with a food-safe grade sanitiser) of all surfaces
  • Staff washing hands more frequently than usual (this is in addition to our standard practice of wearing gloves when handling food)
  • Removing use of communal cutlery. We are in the process of changing all communal cutlery to individually packaged cutlery and straws
  • Increased training to inform our team of the potential risks around stringent new hygiene practices
  • Frequent health and safety spot checks by our managers throughout the day, everyday
  • If any of our team are feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness, we have reinforced that they must remain at home
  • Anyone of our team who returns from any of the high risk travel areas, are required to self-isolate for 2 weeks before they return to work

We are also working closely with our corporate catering customers to ensure they are also looked after during these times. Some of the initiatives we’re introducing are:

  • As we appreciate some gatherings will be cancelled for reasons outside of your control, there will be no cancellation fees for any orders cancelled by 5pm the day before
  • Disposable tongs will be added to all sharing platter orders, at no extra charge
  • Increased individually packed product options will be available if sharing platters are not preferred

With this situation evolving everyday, we will closely monitor advice from government and the health authorities. We will continue to provide you with updates and remain 100% transparent throughout these times.

On behalf of the whole team, thank you for your continued loyalty and choosing us as your destination for real food and coffee.

We welcome any feedback – feel free to email me any feedback directly to eric@feedwell.com.au

Cheers,

Eric, Founder – Real Peas

What is Cold Brew Coffee?

Different to Iced Coffee, Cold Brew is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in room-temperature water for 6 to 18 hours.  This creates a coffee concentrate you mix with cold water or milk.

Perfect to cool you down in this Aussie Summer!

Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year. Particularly because it’s filled with eating copious amounts of delicious food, sharing gifts and spending time with loved ones. Due to the Australian Christmas falling in summer, meats such as ham, chicken or turkey are served cold with cranberry sauce and roast veggies. That’s why Real Peas decided to introduce a Christmas Special, Turkey and Cranberry sandwich!

Served with avocado, cheddar cheese, roma tomatoes and crispy lettuce on a soft multigrain bread, this cranberry and turkey sandwich is one of our tastiest sandwiches yet. What makes it even better is that all the fillings reflects the colours of Christmas too.

Get into the Christmas spirit, come in store and try our delicious Christmas special Cranberry and turkey Sandwich today at our Pitt Street or North Sydney store.

A sandwich is something most people in Australia have enjoyed ever since they were little. They’re tasty, filling, and filled with your favourite ingredients. It’s no wonder that sandwich platters are a popular pick for office and corporate catering and our home delivery, but they are constantly poorly done by others. It’s common to receive tasteless, soggy sandwiches in the catering and home delivery industry in Sydney.

That’s why we have made sure we offer the best sandwich platters in Sydney! Using only the freshest ingredients, and pricing it at affordable cost, this has become one of our most frequently ordered catering and home delivery products for events, entertaining or just enjoying some nibbles with work colleagues, family and friends.

Here’s a few more reasons why:

  • Here at FEEDWELL, we pride ourselves on creating a range of fresh, delicious, handmade sandwich platters every day.
  • All our sandwiches are made with quality local Australian farmed vegetables and we offer a selection that will satisfy everyone (even the picky eaters!). If you enjoy meat you’ll love our famous chicken coronation sandwich, commonly found only in the UK. Otherwise our fluffy, creamy Egg N’ Cress sandwich, or our caramelised onion, tomato, and cheddar cheese sandwich is a great alternative as a vegetarian option – that’s just to name a few!
  • Fresh, fresh, fresh – all our sandwiches, wraps and baguettes are freshly made to order.
  • You can order these items as platters, or individually packed if you prefer (like in the picture below)

Take the next step:

Our sandwich platters stand out from the rest because we cater to you! If you know that a particular sandwich filling is a crowd favourite, let us know and we’ll make sure we increase the quantity for future orders. We also understand that the same sandwich fillings can feel repetitive, especially if you’re ordering all the time. Feel free to let us know that you’d like to mix it up and we’ll do just that.

For variety, you can also find our sandwiches in the Sandwich, Wraps and Baguettes Platter as seen below:

Ordering catering can be complicated, especially when trying to calculate how much to order to ensure everyone eats enough. That’s why we’ve made sure it’s as simplified as possible for you. When ordering for catering, simply enter how many people is it for and each person will receive 1.5 sandwiches per person.

We also offer set boxes for those that wish to buy set platters.

Take the next step:

Office morning tea and afternoon teas are great way to get the team together, take a break, have a laugh, and enjoy a light snack! Often occurring around the 10am and 3pm times, it is the perfect excuse to justify eating between breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

As it is more of a snack to get you through to the next main meal, it can be tricky to decide what to choose to eat.

No need to stress though, we are experts in corporate and office catering, and have you covered with our endless choices!

Our morning tea and afternoon tea platters are perfect for, well, morning and afternoon tea! With a selection of muffins, chocolate brownies, and indulgent nut bars, it’s suitable for everyone’s taste buds. We have a wide selection of healthy, gluten free and vegan options also – most importantly, they are all tasty!

We offer a combination of platters and also single serve individually packed if your office or event prefers this type of packaging. All individually packed items and platters are packed in eco-friendly 100% recyclable packaging.

Need something a little more filling? Our freshly baked pastries, quiches and frittatas will hit the spot. From a selection of plain buttery and chocolate croissants, Danish swirls an freshly baked quiches and frittatas, these will all be a hit!

If you’re ever unsure of what to order, do not hesitate and us a call on (02) 9252 1982 or emails us at orders@feedwell.com.au . Our customer service team are always on standby to help you put a menu together and take on last minute requests.

See our catering menu here:

We deliver throughout Sydney including the Sydney CBD and offer last minute orders and next day delivery.

For those who have had to cater for the office, know it can be awfully tricky. Not only do you need to note down everyone’s allergies and dietary requirements (a never ending list at times), but also make sure you order enough, that the food is presented well, delivered on time, and most importantly enjoyed by everyone!

That’s why we’ve listed the TOP 5 mistakes commonly made, and how to prevent them from happening.

No.1Not ordering enough

Don’t worry – it’s hard to get this right every time. Sometimes you order too little and sometimes you order too much. Here’s a few tips to ensure you order just right with Real Peas.

  1. Look at the icons/our recommendation:

We have icons for our sandwiches, wraps and baguettes platter that show what a small, medium, and large option consists of. We also state how many people our platters will serve. Sometimes it will state “as a side” which means you should order something else to go with it.

  1. Think of who is eating:

Is it more female dominant or male? Males tend eat more, and enjoy those carby, filling options. If you know it’s more male dominant, we suggest ordering a large. More often than not there won’t be much left!

  1. Reach out to us! We are more than happy to give you a draft quote on what we think would be suitable for you, or just to reassure you that what you’ve got sounds spot on.

No.2 – Forgetting to mention allergen’s

It can be easy to forget to mention who has what allergy, and before you know it you’ve ordered all this lovely food but forgot to include gluten free options for example, and someone misses out. If we are aware of any allergens or dietary requirements, we will make sure we include enough tasty food for everyone, as well as label and package the food separately to avoid any cross contamination.

No.3Asking for the food to be delivered the moment you want to eat it!

The meeting has wrapped up early and everyone is ready to eat, but the food isn’t there yet…oh dear! Their hunger turns into anger which means you have a bunch of hangry people surrounding you! (The most dangerous kind)

To avoid this, we suggest asking for the order to be delivered 30 minutes before you’d like to eat. This way you are guaranteed that the food will be there in time, even if it’s a little earlier than expected! Real Peas like to deliver 10 minute before the time you’ve requested, just so we’re on the safe side too 😊

No.4 – Not knowing that we do last minute orders!

You may have been asked to organise a catering….1 hour before the meeting! Don’t stress, it happens a lot. It’s common that most catering companies will say no to this request, however we can do it! As we have kitchens locally in the Sydney CBD and North Sydney, our staff will always do their best to have your order quickly made and delivered. If you have an urgent catering request, call us on (02) 9252 1982 and we will take care of the res.

No.5 Being too scared to try new things!

It can be a little daunting ordering something new that nobody has tried before, or maybe you haven’t ordered with us at all. If that’s the case, reach out and we can drop off some samples. That way you can try the food before you buy the food, see how it’s presented, and feel reassured that everyone will love it when you decide to order!

Have an event coming up?

We deliver throughout the Sydney CBD and North Sydney.

Shockingly, over more than 1 billion takeaway coffee cups are produced, sold, and thrown into landfill. Polyethylene, often found in most takeaway coffee cups, are not reusable, recyclable, and can damage your health. Founded by Rebecca Veksler, SoL is an Australian owned company, evolved by the desire to  make a reusable cup that is plastic free and toxins free.

Partnering Real Peas with SoL was a no-brainer, but why?

The cups are environmentally friendly, portable, and most importantly – indefinitely reusable! Made with hand blown glass, the SoL cups wont absorb residual tastes, odours, germs, and leach chemicals into your beverage! Knowing we can serve our delicious Real Peas coffee, or any other drinks into the SoL cups without the chemicals or bad taste affecting the flavour, is a done deal!

Pronounced “As-sah-hee”, Acai is a tasty superfood that is perfect to eat for breakfast, as a snack, or just to cool you down! Why is it a superfood? Acai contains a bunch of Vitamin A, C, B1, B2, and E. The berries also contain minerals such as zinc, magnesium, calcium and copper.

We love to top our Acai with our specialty handmade granola, shredded coconut, even more berries and some chia seeds. Come on in store and try one today!

Our new Kent Street store has opened 222 Kent Street!

It can be hard to find a good coffee and tasty sandwich at the same place, and most of the time you need to wait longer than 10 minutes! That’s not ideal when you have back to back meetings. This is why we’ve designed the the ideal spot to grab…and go!

Come down and say Hi – We’d love to meet you!
